Brackenfell 1st team captain Wiaan Smit celebrated his 100th career hundred on Saturday when he scored a 64 ball hundred against Wellington.

Wiaan, currently 40 years of age, started early. He scored his 1st hundred for Mikro against De Kuilen as a 10 year old. From Mikro Primary, Wiaan went to Paarl Gymnasium, where he represented the Boland Nuffield team from 1990 – 1992. After finishing he studied at the University of Stellenbosch and it was during this time that he made his First-class debut for Boland. (1994)

After his studies, Wiaan was contracted by the Freestate. Here he played with the likes of Nicky Boje, Gerhardus Liebenberg, Alan Donald and the late Hansie Cronje. Wiaan spent the South African winters playing and coaching cricket in Ireland.

After joining Brackenfell Cricket Club more than a decade ago, he has been instrumental in our success. He has lead the 1st team to numerous trophies and continues to do so. He loves the game and he loves developing young players. He is always willing to share his vast knowledge with them.

I am not sure if everyone understands the magnitude of Wiaan's achievement. There are many very fine cricketers out there, who retire, not having scored double figures in centuries. The word Legend is used way too often, but this would be an appropriate description.

We are very proud of our captain, long may the runs flow. Wiaan Smit we salute you !
