Tough Day at the Office
Match Report: Brackenfell vs Maties – 11 October 2014
After a very successful first game of the season against Paarl, a much tougher assignment awaited the Brackenfell 1st team on the second Saturday of the season. The defending league champions of the past two seasons, Maties visited the Oval and it promised to be a very closely contested affair.
On a very dry and slow wicket, the toss would always be an important factor and "tails never fails" was the right call from Emile Kriek, the Matie skipper. Brackenfell knew they had to take early wickets to put the pressure on the students from the off and Mondle Mahlombe and Johan Loubser duly obliged by removing the dangerous Wikus van Vuuren and Emile Kriek in the first 6 overs. Jean Bredenkamp and Uwe Birkenstock showed good composure and class to rebuild the innings, albeit at a rather sedate pace. When Grant Edmeades managed to remove both players in quick succession, it left the match in the balance with the students on 105/4 in the 33 over. The much underrated Dewald Botha however came to the Maties rescue with a classy and mature innings of 45* off 48 balls. His knock held the Maties innings together and helped them to post a very competitive 187/8 in their 50 overs. Mondle Mahlombe was the pick of the bowlers for Brackenfell picking up 1 for 14 in his 10 overs and Grant Edmeades and Johan Loubser returning figures of 3/37 and 2/37 respectively.
188 was always going to be a tough target on a dry and deteriorating wicket that made scoring against the seamers very difficult and assisted the spinners greatly. Grant Edmeades and Zaheer Lorgat set off at a good pace until Zaheer was unlucky to be caught at mid-on after the ball deflected of the bowler. 17/1 for 1 quickly became 24/3 as the Brackenfell batsmen found runs hard to come by against a very disciplined bowling attack of Maties. Justin Dill was in outstanding form picking up 2 for 4 in his first 7 overs. When Michael Loubser departed to leave the score at 45/5, things were not looking very good for the hosts. Du Toit Maree with 39 runs, Ockert Erasmus with 27 and Wian Engelbrecht with 24, did restore some respectability to the score and at one stage Brackenfell needed 40 runs from 30 balls with 3 wickets in hand. Unfortunately, it all came to a sudden halt as Dewald Botha picked up the last 3 wickets in quick succession to leave the students winning the match by 34 runs.
Maxs Points in Paarl
Match report: 4 Oct 2014 played at Paarl
Starting the 2014/2015 season away against Paarl, was always going to be an interesting start to the season. With a few debutants in the side looking to impress their new club, we started really well.
Grant and Manrich got us off to a great start, scoring 107 runs for the 1st wicket partnership. Zahier came in next chipping in with a good solid 40 runs for a second wicket partnership of 81 runs (188/2). During the second wicket partnership, Grant reached his maiden century for the club. Grant was dismissed the very next ball after Zahier for a well played 100. Our power hitter, Michael Loubser (AKA Hitler) finished off with a blitzing 80 of 36 balls (7x6 and 4x4), helping us to post a very good score of 284/6 on a low and slow wicket.
We went into field next, knowing we had a few things to work on. Mondle and Johan started us off, both bowling great opening spells. Ockie, Herman (Vellies) and Michael backed up the good start with very economical bowling figures. Johan Laubser was very good in the field and helped himself to a direct hit run out.
In the end we restricted them to 167/6 which is 117 runs short of the total. With a good all round team performance, we all are looking forward to a great season for BCC and the push to finish top of the log!
Mondle | 10 | 0 | 31 | 1 |
Johan Loubser | 10 | 0 | 15 | 1 |
Ockie | 10 | 0 | 19 | 1 |
Vellies | 5 | 1 | 17 | 0 |
Michael | 5 | 0 | 12 | 1 |
Wian Engelbrecht | 4 | 0 | 26 | 1 |

Warm up Match
24 September 2014
Today we had the luxury to put two teams into the field that played a warm – up game against each other. This was the ideal opportunity to have a real look at the players (outside of the nets), especially the new ones that have joined us.
It was a cloudy, cold but dry morning with not a great forecast for the day in terms of rain. Despite this the game started on time and 4 or of the 5 new guys were in action after two overs. Manrich Kotze and Grant Edmeades opened the batting while Juan Grobbelaar and Mondli Mahlombe opened the bowling for their respective teams. It was definitely a day for the boulers with the wicket seaming all over the place in the beginning and turned square later on. The slow outfield coupled with good bowling kept it to a low scoring game. The idea of the game was for the batters and bowlers to spend some time in the middle and get rid of the cobwebs with the match result not off any importance.
A truly satisfying day with everyone giving 110%. After the game we had a nice group meeting with some light refreshments to satisfy the thirst.

Clash of the Titans - BRC vs BCC
Rugby chaps take on their cricketing neighbours
On Saturday 27 September BCC hosted the BRC (Brackenfell Rugby Club) for an inaugural Cricket Club vs Rugby Club fixture. Festivities were indeed kicked off in a festive mood as the team representatives agreed to break the mould by slightly bending the rules to accommodate both teams.
It was decided that batsman were to retire on 25 n.u.n. only to be able to return once the remainder of the batting line-up were all back in the shed. Overs were fixed on 35 overs per team based on the notion that everyone "need to have a bowl" and that the full complement had to be bowled. The toss of the coin was also replaced by a mutual decision that BCC need to bat first in order to get maximum game time. Everyone smilingly agreed to these terms.
BRC started off brightly in the field taking a few early scalps. Granted this was achieved by those who have turned the arm in the past decade! An early opportunity was however missed when first team loose forward and captain, Corne Neethling, put down what many believed to have been a "sitter" at second slip off the first ball of the game. Everything went swimmingly for the BRC XI until the arrival of the talented Rainard Archer.
Archie impressed all involved with his sweet timing of the ball and array of strokes. It wasn't long before Archie and captain Arthur Mostert had to depart reaching the 25 n.u.n. milestone. Archie was back on the square within minutes, apparently needing "batting practise", to torment the forwards with some more sublime stroke making. Everyone involved was however very impressed with the swing bowling of fullback Nathan Kolbe (aptly renamed the "Faimont Express"), who took care of a few of the BCC middle order batsman as well as the left arm orthodox spin bowling of the 14-year old Faffie Briel (son of first team forwards coach, Jacques Briel).
After Anelda Lucas declared her undying love for first team flyhalf Rudie Hasse during the break, roles were reversed. BRC held out for a couple of overs to see off the opening bowlers with the "wide count" the main contributor to the score board. After the fall of the first wicket everyone was momentarily in awe of the batting antics of 15-year old batsman Boeta Chamberlain (a replacement player). Boeta scored freely all around the park and everyone was in agreement that Boeta is one for the future. BCC will do well to secure Boeta's services for the upcoming season.
After Boeta's forced retirement, he was replaced by the hard hitting 8thman AB Nel. AB wasn't holding back and quickly reached the retirement milestone. It is best to be said that Boeta and AB was reunited shortly afterwards with the remainder of the batting line-up, with the exception of Faffie Briel, not providing a lot of resistance. AB then entertained the crowd with some more hard hitting ending his day on a well-played 52, which included a monumental maximum over "cow corner". That one smelled its first blade of grass in the middle of the B rugby field.
After the fat lady sung the BCC XI reigned supreme. BCC score 185/7 and BRC replied with 160/13(!) after a full 35 overs were bowled by both teams. But somehow this was not important in the context of the day. As per standard procedure the BRC XI was afterwards exposed to the "spin-run-kick" baptism, to the amusement of everyone in attendance. This was followed up by the customary braai.
In conclusion, everyone had fun and it was agreed that this should be a yearly event. Thank you to newly appointed BCC coach Riaan Oosthuizen for making the necessary arrangements. All the best to BCC for the upcoming season. Your progress will be eagerly followed and supported by BRC.
Till next time.
