Match Report: Brackenfell vs Robertson – 18 October 2014

The Brackenfell 1st team played away against the new boys in the top league and what a game it was! After the long trip to Robertson on a warm and sunny day we were greeted with a very nice looking venue. After our warm-up drills (on a hot day) we lost the toss and took to the field bowing first. The deck looked very good for batting and we would have done the same if we won the toss.

Roberston started very well with a good opening partnership between Lakay and Philemon of 47, with Philemon taking the game to Brackenfell with attacking batting, before Ocki Erasmus took the 1st wicket (Lakay out for 6). Philemon kept attacking and reached his 50 in no time. At the score for 75/1 our skipper, Wian Smit came on to bowl and removed the dangerous Philemon for 55 (caught and bowled). Wian took another wicket the next ball and suddenly the score was 75/3. From here it went all backwards for Robertson and was dismissed for 138 in the 48th over.

Our star bowlers were:
Wian Smit            10-2-24-4
Grant Edmeades 10-2-21-3
Ocki Erasmus       7,3-1-23-2

We had a 10 minute break and then had to go bat for 48 minutes until the scheduled lunch break. The message was to bat and survive till lunch and see off their main weapons in F. Adams (ex – Cobra player) together with the experienced player coach, Zahir Abrahim at a tender age of 42 (ex – Boland & Dolphins opening bowler).

We were on the back foot from the 1st over when Adams dismissed Lorgat for 0. In Admas next over he dismissed Muffin for 0 and we were struggling at 1 for 2 after 3 overs. F. Adams and Abrahim kept coming at us and by lunch time we were reeling at 15 for 5 after 9 overs.

During lunch the coach had some "chosen" words with the team and asked that we need to pull our fingers out our backsides if we want to win this game. After lunch the two opening bowlers kept bowling and soon they struck twice and we were battling at 27/7. By now Ocki Erasmus and Wian Engelbrecht were at the wicket. The two openers bowled for 15 overs before a double change were made and that eased the pressure on the batsman as the Robertson openers bowled extremely well. Ocki and Wian battled on for the next 13 overs and managed to pile up 64 runs in those 13 overs. Wian was dismissed soon after the afternoon drinks brake with the score now on 91/1. With believe back in the side Vellies and Ocki took us home in the 39th over for a bonus point win. Ocki managed to score two runs of the last bal to reached his 50.

A truly unbelievable game with the odds heavily against us at 27/7. Well done to the boys for showing great character and composure at the end.

Our batting heroes were:
Ocki Erasmus - 50 not out.
Wian Engelbrecht - 31
Vellies - 22 not out
